Pro Staff: Jessie Ann’s Deer Hunt

Hey everybody!  Its Jessie Ann again. I know its been a while since my last post, but I wanted to put up something good from deer season. Unfortunately this year I got to eat “tag steak,” because I didn’t fill a single tag. I didn’t get to hunt much either, but I’m very grateful for the times that did. I’m okay with not filling a tag, because I just enjoy being outdoors. Not every hunt ends with game in the bag.

When I went hunting with my brother this year, we went to a spot where he had shot two does the day before, and we were sure I would see some deer. After we got to the spot, we weren’t feeling too good about it, because the wind direction was wrong for that particular spot.

We sat in the spot for a little while, and we started hearing something, and it kept getting closer and closer. It turned out to be a man and a woman on a 4-wheeler, trespassing and running deer to the neighboring property. My brother talked to them and asked them to leave. When he got back he told me that they had both been drinking and that he saw them holding beer cans. They went on about their way, and we decided to get out of the area to avoid dealing with irresponsible adults, and to hopefully find some deer.

On our way to the second spot, we jumped up a big group of does and they took off running. We decided to sit down against a tree rather than push them farther into the timber. We sat there about an hour and had two does run by at about 50 yards with a small buck right on their tails, but they wouldn’t stop running. We kept sitting there and after another half hour or so, five does walked to within 80 yards.

I took forever trying to decide which one to shoot. And once I finally shot…I missed!

I was so upset! Then I got over it pretty quickly, because I’ve killed plenty of deer in the past.

A successful hunt is not measured by the amount of game you take, its measured  by whether or not you enjoyed yourself. After all, a bad day hunting is still better than a good day at school! Well, now you know about my 2008 deer season. I hope you guys had better luck than me.

Stay safe out there.  —Jessie Ann

    Hey Jesse–
Sorry to hear there was some tresspassers running around messing things up for ya. . . That’s one thing that really gets under my skin!

But, you stuck to it, and didn’t let it ruin your trip. Good vid! Anytime you can squeeze a little CCR into a hunting trip is just fine with me :)

    Keep it up!

Yeesh! Can’t you get arrested for doing that?

First–sorry for the spelling error JESSIE. . . my bad. . . Sometimes my fingers don’t do what I’m telling them to do. . .

Turkey–yes, you can get arrested, but more important than that, it’s just the wrong thing to do. I’ve had many hunts ruined by tresspassers over the years. And it’s funny, if they asked the landowner if they could hunt (like I did) they would probably be allowed!!!

ya, my dad had a run in with one this past deer season. he tried to get in to my dads blind while my dad was in it.

Yes, Turkeyman, he was doing several things that he couldve been arrested for. We would have made a report with the Sheriff’s Office, but sometimes, especially when youre hunting on other people’s land, you have to play the “neighbor” politics game, and do what the landowner asks of you. We didnt let it get us down though, and luckily, the property was big enough we could get far enough away from them that we couldnt even hear or see them, and felt pretty safe.

And those are the reasons most states have a hunter orange requirement….

So you mean the landowner asked you not to worry about it? Well, anyway nice video. I just hope I don’t encounter a trespasser when turkey hunting this spring, especially with no blaze orange and if they’re as irresponsible as the ones you had to deal with.

there is a gang of guys down here that think they own all the woodlots around the area, going where they please. they just don’t have the courage or something to ask the owners. they ruin deer weekend for me. they’ve even had the gall to take down my no trespassing signs for me. this is a touchy subject for me cuz i have a little piece of abandoned pasture that i love to hunt. i’m never very successful in it but it’s a place i can call my own.
