2009 Turkey Triumphs
So far, so good. It seems like those who are getting out this spring are finding the turkeys. After posting a short story last week about Kevin Croteau’s dream to build a better turkey call, I found something else.
This story highlights some of the most successful youth hunts so far this season. Fourteen-year old Sawyer Meese (above) is one hunter mentioned. He dropped a 30-pound gobbler while hunting with his dad. Cole Warlop also took a bird—his first—that weighed an impressive 22 pounds. Riley Hill also tagged a bird after a group of hens nearby called it in for him. In one swoop, these hunters did what it sometimes takes others years to accomplish. Congratulations.
The spring gobbler season is just starting to get hot around my neck of the woods, but I haven’t had a chance to get out yet. Is anyone else enjoying success? —Ben

The youth day for my state is Saturday so hopefully I can share a sucess story with you on sunday or monday
April 23rd, 2009 at 10:31 amThats a good first turkey. Opening day for turkey started today in PA and i was succsesful in shooting my first turkey. I also got the hunt on film so that will be up soon!
April 25th, 2009 at 2:10 pmI just got back from turkey hunting and, well, I wasn’t so successful. As far as gobbles and calling things in it was our best year to date. My dad and cousin both got one the first day, but I got my oppurtunity and missed a jake. I hit him, he flopped a little, got up and flew away. It rained most of the next day, but there was a little period where it didn’t, and we called on within 15 yards, but it was right behind us and never got a shot.
April 26th, 2009 at 2:22 pmThe youth hunt was saturday and i wasn’t succesful but my cousin got a 19 pound 7 ounce tom with 7 inch beard it was a very good morning.
April 27th, 2009 at 3:20 pmNice.
April 28th, 2009 at 4:28 amThanks for the update guys! Tough luck TK, sorry your bird got away! You guys keep heading out, you’re certainly having better luck than I am.
April 28th, 2009 at 12:12 pm30 pounds! Wow! I got a 22 pounder with two beards for my first turkey. Now I wish it wasn’t all over though.
April 29th, 2009 at 3:28 pmBen L., did you get your 22 pounder this year? Even if you didn’t, your bird is nothing to sneeze at—-even compared to a 30 pounder. I’ll take a gobbler like yours any day of the week!
April 29th, 2009 at 3:44 pmThanks. Yes, it was this year. I can’t wait until next year!
