Free Fishing—Get It While It’s Hot!

Now that school is finally out, it’s time to celebrate. And what better event than National Fishing and Boating week (June 6-14, 2009)?

This annual event occurs each year during the first week of June, and beside being a good reminder to get out and wet a line, it typically kicks off fishing derbies all over the country. What’s even better, many states offer free fishing days during this week. It’s the perfect opportunity to get out and fish without having to worry about a fishing license. Trust me, it’s worth it.

In my state, it looks like our freebie is this Saturday, so you can bet I’ll be on the water with a few newbies in tow. It’s much easier to introduce someone to the sport when they don’t have to pay for anything (HA!). In fact, that’s one of my own personal unwritten rules of fishing—it’s always better when someone else goes with you. If you head out, let me know if the fish were biting and if you were able to tow someone along for the ride (especially if they’ve never fished before). —Ben

i dont get out until June 25th my town was one of the ones that got hit by the major ice storm and we had a month long christmas break, it cut off a week of shotgun season and now is taking away from my fishing. the upper east coast is a horrible place to live

Holy Smokes! Stinks to be you guys! Our schools let out last week, so I assumed everyone else was on the same page. That’s at least a week or two more school! Now I just feel like I rubbed salt in your wounds.

But I remember those nasty storms, so I’m sorry you guys have to pay for the snow days now. . . But wow Ben, a month long Christmas break!?!? Weather must have pounded you guys hard!

I’m with tyler, i dont get out till the 16th either. I might go up for fly fishing this weekend. I’m still looking for my first fish on one of my flies. I haven’t been able to get out as much as i’d like.

We got an inch to an inch and a half thick ice coating and didnt have power for a week and a half and our school was a emergency shelter so there was nothing we could do and like i said right in the middle of shotgun season so it was a horrible extra week and a half

Yeesh. I got done with school today (Finally!). I definitely hope to get in on some bass action in the next few weeks. There will be a few “newer”bies at our family tournament a few weeks from now.

Hey TK, I’d like to know more about your family tournament. My dad and I always have a little unspoken competition between us when we’re on the water, but it sounds like your family puts on something a little more festive. Whatever it is, GOOD LUCK!

Sorry, I typed TK, but I meant Turkey—
my fingers aren’t doing what I tell them to do this morning. . .

Yeah, basically everybody fishes, from my grandpa (who is in his 70s) down to my cousin (who is 6). Two people go at once, and they get an hour to fish. Highest total weight wins. If no fish are caught, the most strikes wins. (That’s what happened last year… It’s a long story.) Only catfish count. We have a junior division and an adult division.
