Pro Staff Video: Nate Dean Fishes a “Hard Water” Hot Spot

Hey everyone, it’s Nate Dean from the Generation Wild Pro Staff. Well it is winter time in Wisconsin. With temps below zero, the ice is safe and it is time to start doing some “hard water” fishing, as we call it here in Wisconsin. In this video we are out on a pretty small lake, right in the middle of the city. This lake is surrounded by a large city park, huge hospital, and apartments. So it is not a secluded lake, that’s for sure. Half Moon Lake is a small Eutrophic lake, with a max depth around 13 feet. In this video, we are fishing in about 10 feet of water, with a weedy bottom, and jigging for small panfish right along a drop going from seven to 10 feet. The weather was perfect and the spot was spectacular, so all we needed was for the bluegills and the largemouth bass to cooperate. I hope you enjoy some rod bending action. —Nate

Nate—great video! Good tips, good instruction, and you caught a few fish to show us how it’s done (that’s the first largemouth I’ve seen caught while ice fishing). Well done. . .

Believe it or not, I’ve never ice fished before. I planned on giving it a shot this year, but the weather is working in my favor this year. If, when I make it on the ice, there’s a good chance I’m going to rack your brain about what to do!

    Keep stuff like that coming!

I love the details you gave! I might need to find out more about the Pak Shak. The flashers really help I have heard so I’ll need to find one. How much did you pay for your Vex?

  9. Nate Dean says:

Turkeyman- Yeah once you get a vexilar you cant fish without it, there are pretty exspensive but they are well worth the money. My vexilar was given to me from my uncle, but i did some research and the vexilars range from a little under 300 dollars to about 500 dollars, it really depends on how much bells and whistles you want.

Thanks Nate — I’ll look into either the lower-end Vexilar or the Humminbird, but I guarantee ya I’ll have a flasher by next year!
